5th grade

If you have seen the TV show, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, you may have concluded that there is a lot of information that is learned in 5th grade.  Students in 5th grade will learn all of the basic math information that they will need to carry them through the next several years.  In addition to all of the academic material, 5th grade is a year when students are expected to become more independent.  They will learn the necessity of keeping track of due dates and chunking parts of long term assignments.  For the first time in their academic careers, they will delve into American History to a level that is deeper than ever before.  They will spend a month learning about embryology or the development of a chicken embryo.  The culmination of this unit is the hatching of eggs that the children have cared for and watched develop through various stages.  You can help your fifth grader by encouraging him or her to be less dependent on your help in remembering to complete assignments.
