Teachers Engage in the 4Cs of STEM Education: Skills for the 21st Century
On October 10, teachers across the district engaged in a design challenge that required their complete engagement with each of the 4Cs: Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking/Problem Solving, and Creativity. Teachers worked in pairs or in teams of 3-5 members and used the district's recently-purchased littleBits kits (magnetic electronic pieces) to invent either the "Crazitastic Candy Container" or the "Perfectly Practical Pencil." WOW, their inventions were just amazing! The real work came in when the teams needed to assess their performance using the new district rubric for each of the 4Cs. The next step for teachers will be to incorporate at least one "C" at a time into a lesson or activity, and use the rubric to "coach" students to improve their employment of that crucial 21st century skill: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, or Creativity.
