The Penn Bernville and Bethel “Weekend Backpack Caregiver” programs serve over 120 district elementary students. Every Friday students in need receive a backpack filled with food from the Greater Berks Food Bank. The bags consist of cereals, canned fruits and veggies, drinks, grains, and various snacks. The program is coordinated by the elementary school nurses and is run with volunteers from the Bethel PTO, and Kay Hartranft, leading a dedicated team of volunteers at Penn Bernville. Both the life skills classes at the High School, and Penn Bernville also help to pack the bags! Thank you to all the volunteers who make this program a success, and for helping to fight hunger in our community.
